His debut CD, a recording of the complete Chopin Preludes, was released in October 2014 on the Zig-Zag Territories label. » At the 2012 Leeds International Piano Competition, Tyson won Fifth Prize and the new Terence Judd-Hallé Orchestra Prize, awarded to the pianist chosen by the orchestra and conductor Sir Mark Elder. This prize brought three performances of Rachmaninov’s Concerto No. 2 with the Hallé Orchestra, which were so acclaimed that he was re-engaged to perform with the orchestra last season and this season. » After early studies with Dr. Thomas Otten of the University of North Carolina, Tyson attended the Curtis Institute of Music, where he worked with Claude Frank. He later earned his Master’s degree and Artist Diploma at The Juilliard School with Robert McDonald, where he won the Gina Bachauer Piano Competition and received the Arthur Rubinstein Prize in Piano.

Hosted by UAB Artist-in-residence Eric Essix, The Essentials is the ASC’s innovative series devoted to honoring the rich history of jazz. » Join us for the third installment of The Essentials as we continue our journey exploring bebop. » The evening begins with a survey of the unique history of bebop, the music, and the artists – led by Essix and featuring NEA Jazz Master and renowned award-winning saxophonist Branford Marsalis. » The second half of the evening features a performance by Marsalis as he leads one of the finest jazz quartets assembled. » This three-time Grammy Award winner has continued to exercise and expand his skills as an instrumentalist, a composer, and the head of Marsalis Music. Marsalis founded the label in 2002 and continues to produce both his own projects and those of the jazz world’s most promising new and established artists.
