Hope Takes the Stage

How high is height? How far is distance? How many stars are in the sky?

What would you do in the face of injustice?

Birmingham's transformation as a city over the last 50 years serves as a beacon of light not only to other cities across the country, but to communities throughout the world. This September, the Alys Stephens Center celebrates the continued growth and healing of Birmingham through three compelling and diverse performances. We believe our commemorative events will inspire reflection on the past, evaluation of the present, and hopeful dialogue about the future.

It takes all of our voices to make a difference.
Help us tell the world that, this year,
Hope Takes the Stage.

Urinetown: The Musical. Music by Mark Hollmann, lyrics by Mark Hollmann and Greg Kotis, and book by Greg Kotis.
Directed by Valerie Accetta
In a Gotham-like city a catastrophic twenty-year drought has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets to conserve water. The citizens must use pay-per-use amenities owned and operated by Urine Good Company, a malevolent corporation run by the corrupt Caldwell B. Cladwell. Amid the people, a hero decides he's had enough, and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom! Winner of three Tony awards and one of the most uproariously funny musicals in recent years, Urinetown has been touted as reinvigorating the very notion of what a musical could be!
