ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWS: Directed by Douglas Sirk and released in 1955, starring Jane Wyman and Rock Hudson. The film explored a forbidden romance between a wealthy widow and a much younger man who worked for her as a gardener. It explores the painful results of social ostracism. A profoundly felt film about class and conformity in small-town America, All That Heaven Allows is a pinnacle of expressionistic Hollywood melodrama.
FAR FROM HEAVEN: Directed by Todd Haynes and was released in November 2002, starring Julianne Moore, Dennis Quaid and Dennis Haysbert. Todd Haynes was inspired by the 1955 movie and this more modern version illustrates how sexuality, class and race face the suburban families of the 1950’s.
