Artisan Center Theater is looking for PROPS DESIGNERS.

This is a stipend position to the right candidate.

 

Job Summary: The Props Designer is responsible for obtaining all props needed for the production. They also work with the Stage Manager in gathering appropriate rehearsal props early in the rehearsal process. They may also be called upon to help the Scene Designer dress the set. The primary objective is to create the right atmosphere, through props that indicate time of day and location, reinforce the overall style of the production, and help tell the story.​

 

Props Designer Responsibilities:

  • Designer agrees to schedule adequate time with the Director for design execution; work within the existing inventories/restrictions of Artisan.

  • Works directly with directors and Scenic Designer to establish priorities and keep expenditures within predetermined time and budget constraints based on approved final designs.

  • Making a props plot for the show 

  • Do research on the time period/style of show so as to be as accurate as possible 

  • Collaborates with Director, Scenic Designer and Stage Management to create and update prop lists.

  • Determines or approves approaches, procedures, and techniques to create or acquire all hand props, furniture, and set dressing for the production.

  • Purchasing materials for building props and making sure of their completion in a timely manner and pulling from Artisan’s Prop Stock 

  • Working with volunteers to collect/make props as needed 

  • Having rehearsal props ready by time agreed upon by the Director

  • Keep production manager apprised of build & budget status.

  • Keep all expenses within budget and return in receipts promptly to the production manager. 

  • Coordinate properties load-in for the production, communicating with stage crew and stage management regarding instructions and expectations. 


  • Organizing the show prop table, creating and labeling on prop table for each prop to live when not in use during production; and organize storage placement for larger carry/roll pieces 

  • May be asked to help dress the set on those productions for which props are an important part of the dressing

  • Attend all production meetings, technical, and dress rehearsals.

  • Check Rehearsal and Production Reports 

  • Responds to stage management communication regarding props issues as needed. Advises stage crew regarding maintenance and repair of props as needed. 


  • Coordinates properties strike, ensuring responsible return of borrowed/loaned props.

  • Be familiar with safe operating procedures of working with properties. 

  • Demonstrate professional behavior and respect for others at all times.

  • Report all incidents and emergencies to Artisan staff.

  • Communicate and enforce Texas Code of Conduct. No use of alcohol or illegal substances is allowed in and around Artisan Center Theater.

 

Abilities and Qualifications:

  • Proficient in programs including but not limited to: Excel, Word, and Google Drive.​

  • Work schedule varies and includes evening and weekend hours.
