In service to our mission to catalyze new art, the Performing Arts Space Rental Program is at the heart of Dance Loft’s efforts to provide local dance and theater artists and companies with regular access to affordable rehearsal and performance space. As such, we work to ensure that three of four rehearsal studios are available for outside artists at times they are most needed.
Dance Loft on 14 is one of the few DC dance studio to provide affordable and ongoing weeknight and weekend “prime time” rehearsal slots, which are vital for artists with 9-5 day jobs. Furthermore, we offer artist subsidies for space rentals during weekdays, lowering the cost of rental space by 60% for full-time artists.
For performing artists, access to sufficient space for rehearsal and production uses is vitally essential to the development and creation of new work; by providing newly renovated spaces that are optimized for these uses to DC artists at highly affordable rates, Dance Loft helps to ensure that the District’s home-grown performance arts scene will continue to expand and thrive.
Dance Loft on 14 provides a much-needed performance venue, enabling companies and choreographers to showcase their work and build their audiences. Dance Loft provides performance space and full production support for performances in our theater, which includes lighting and sound production capabilities and artist services.
In 2019 alone, we will present dance and theater showings for a total of 75-100 individual performances by guest artists, our resident theater companies, independent choreographers, and MOVEIUS’s own contemporary ballet ensemble.
This is an initiative designed to use dance to inspire students to participate in and enjoy the performing arts, Dance for Youth’s goal is to provide an opportunity to engage with and learn about movement and performing arts for young people who may otherwise have limited opportunities to do so.
The program reflects a core component of Dance Loft’s mission – to provide accessible opportunities for arts engagement for all residents of the region, regardless of income, background, or location. Our nationally recognized instructors teach a robust lineup of youth dance classes at our Dance Loft on 14 facility. Dance styles include ballet, modern dance, creative movement, breakdancing, and hip-hop.
Dance Loft also provides programming for underserved Ward 4 public school students, ages 3 to 14, who are engaging with high-quality professional dance for the very first time. We offer ongoing bilingual after-school dance lessons at host schools, as well as field trips with a preparatory dance workshop in-school followed by a professional performance at our Dance Loft facility.
We offer a range of contemporary dance classes for professional dancers and dance enthusiasts.
We offer daily ballet classes; weekly dance fitness, improvisation, flow arts, and hip-hop classes; and an annual three-week intensive summer course for adults in classical, contemporary, and Latin styles. We also partner with other dance organizations to host master classes led by visiting performing ensembles.
For patrons residing in Ward 4, Dance Loft provides 8-10 free tickets at each dance presentation through our "Ward 4 Arts Access Initiative." If you are a DC Ward 4 resident and would like to request Ward 4 Arts Access tickets, please contact us or call (202) 621-3670.
