Jazz At the Athenaeum—Streaming Live!
Fall 2020
Well over 100 audience members attended each of the live-streamed concerts in September and October, which featured Holly Hofmann and Joshua White, and Mike Wofford with Rob Thorsen and Jim Plank. The San Diego Union-Tribune’s David Coddon wrote “Pre-pandemic, the Athenaeum was my favorite venue in town for live jazz. Surrounded by books and with the musicians just a breath away, it’s an immersive experience. A virtual streaming can’t duplicate that, of course, but I absolutely did enjoy the Holly Hofmann/Joshua White show…The closeups of the musicians during the performance were thoughtfully executed and timely, and the acoustics crisp even via my laptop computer. Put it this way: I turned off “Monday Night Football” to watch the concert.”
We are pleased to announce that Jazz at the Athenaeum STREAMING LIVE! continues in November and December, each to feature an extraordinary guitarist and longtime Athenaeum favorite. Tickets are $12 for members, $17 for the general public. Ticket holders have access to view the programs for 48 hours after each live stream event.

Libraries are supposed to be places where silence prevails, but the quiet of the Athenaeum feels expectant, perhaps because jazz has been presented there for 20 years…The acoustics are excellent and a beneficent ambience is created by the long shelves of music books and the art covering the walls.
—Thomas Conrad, JazzTimes magazine
A devotion to showcasing top-quality artists has been a constant at the Athenaeum…That the jazz series has not only survived, but thrived, for a quarter century is cause for celebration.” “Artists who have performed here under the auspices of the Athenaeum include past and present legends…[and] area headlining debuts of younger artists who are also likely to achieve legendary status.
—George Varga, UT San Diego
