PEEC Youth Arts (Participate. Explore. Engage. Create)


The Athenaeum Music & Arts outreach program provides free educational opportunities on music, the visual arts and art practice to K–12 students throughout San Diego County. The following programs are currently available: Journey Through Music, Journey Through Art History, and Journey Through Art Practice. Each presentation adheres to the Visual and Performing Arts standards, intertwining music and the visual arts with math, geography, science, social studies, and history. In addition, we offer free teen programs in La Jolla and Logan Heights.

PEEC Youth Arts, the Athenaeum’s free program for teens offers a rotation of multidisciplinary art instructors and curricular activities involving the use of the Athenaeum library resources and art exhibitions as starting points for projects.

The PEEC is a free program especially designed to engage local teens and highlight the diversity of teaching artists throughout San Diego. From painting to printmaking, drawing, sculpture, and photography, participating teens will have the opportunity to explore a variety of media and teaching styles. Field trips, gallery visits, and special events will round out the experience. PEEC takes place on Tuesday from 3:30–5:00 p.m. at the Athenaeum Art Center in Logan Heights (1955 Julian Avenue, San Diego, CA 92113).

About the program:


Artist-led classes for teens covering various fabric arts, beginning with natural dyeing techniques. Learn the art of Shibori and tinting cotton fibers with natural pigments such as turmeric, beets and green leaves. We are limiting class size to 7 participants to maintain COVID-19 safety protocols. 


Clases dirigidas por artistas para adolescentes que cubren varias artes de la tela, comenzando con técnicas de teñido natural. Aprende el arte de Shibori; teñir fibras de algodón con pigmentos naturales como cúrcuma, remolacha y hojas verdes. Limitamos el tamaño de la clase a 7 participantes para mantener los protocolos de seguridad COVID-19.
