Jim Papoulis, Clinician and Composer

Composer Jim Papoulis co-founder of the Foundation for Small Voices (FSV), which was officially launched with its first Sounds of a Better World concert at Carnegie Hall in January 2000. FSV is greatly inspired by Jim’s dedication to children and music, with a significant portion of his time and talent given to composing music with and for children. In addition to teaching songwriting workshops globally for FSV, he donates his composer royalties back to FSV as well.

Jim Papoulis was with our first TICF in 2018. Here’s what one director says, “Jim Papoulis is a musical Peter Pan, in all the good senses of the character. The singers loved him and the experiences e offered.” In addition to conference honor choirs, Jim has conducted regional and state festivals throughout the United States. He has served as composer-in-residence at Cincinnati Conservatory of Music with the Cincinnati Children’s Choir for their annual Queen City Festival since 2007, has served as composer-in-residence for the Choral Music Experience Workshop with Janet Galvan at Ithaca College, and was the keynote speaker at the Ontario
Music Educators convention in 2014. Together with Sophia Papoulis, he has created, designed, and presented Professional Development seminars in Canada, Florida, Delaware, Connecticut, Virginia, Massachusetts, and New York.

Mr. Papoulis composes, orchestrates, and conducts music for dance, film, ensembles, and choirs. His compositions are known for exploring new modes of musical communication by honoring and connecting classical and traditional forms with non-Western sounds. Jim’s distinct and ever- evolving approach unites classical with contemporary sounds, world rhythms, R&B, and voices, while combining live instruments with current composing and recording technology.

For our 2020 TICF we have commissioned Mr. Papoulis to write a piece for our Festival choir. We are excited to work with him and sing this world premier.
