Historical Flutes with Immanuel Davis

The flute changed dramatically from the Baroque to the modern era, and with those changes have come changes in tonal quality and color. In this Perspective, Immanuel Davis talks about three Baroque and early Classical flutes that he uses in his Staunton performances, including instruments ideally suited to Bach, Haydn, Beethoven, and Schubert.
Immanuel Davis is one of the most versatile flutists of his generation. Equally at home on modern and baroque flutes, Immanuel has performed as a soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States and abroad. In 2005 he received a Fulbright Fellowship to study baroque flute at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in The Hague. Since then he has performed as soloist and chamber player with such early music ensembles as Early Music New York, ARTEK, Lyra Baroque and the Bach Society of Minnesota and Mercury Orchestra of Houston. He has also had the pleasure of performing on NPR’s Performance Today and in recitals with baroque luminaries Barthold Kuijken and Wilbert Hazelzet.
With its brilliant combination of solo instruments as well as its stunning, five-minute keyboard cadenza, Bach's fifth Brandenburg Concerto is one of the pinnacles in Baroque music. This HD recording features Immanuel Davis (flute), Plamena Nikitassova (violin), and Mark Shuldiner (harpsichord).

Performed in 2016, Bach's magnificent Mass in B Minor includes both grand chorus and tender solos and duets. The "Domine Deus" is scored for flute solo, played by Immanuel Davis, and vocal duet featuring soprano Megan Chartrand and tenor Scott Mello.
Carsten Schmidt directs a period instrument performance of Schubert's Symphony No. 8 in B Minor--the so-called "Unfinished" because Schubert did not complete more than the first two movements before his death. In HD with program notes.
