To fully understand the premise of “Buyer and Cellar,” a Thalian Hall Cube Theater production which begins a three-weekend run on Thursday, February 8th at the Ruth and Bucky Stein Theater, you need to know that superstar Barbra Streisand really does have a shopping mall in the basement of her Malibu home. The basement is large enough to feature a doll shop, an antique clothing store and sweets shop, complete with a frozen yogurt machine, as detailed in Streisand’s 2010 book, My Passion for Design.
Playwright Jonathan Tolins takes the wackiness of real life a step further as he imagines a man who is hired to work in the basement mall, and Babs is his only customer.
As directed by Shane Fernando, the one-man show tells the story of Alex More, a struggling Los Angeles actor who takes the job as much out of curiosity as financial need. But, being an actor, he can’t help getting into the role of the sole proprietor of the subterranean Main Street. And, when the fabulous star herself pops into Bell’s Doll Shop, he can’t resist playing along with the game. Alex even makes up a romantic history about one of the dolls that catch’s Barbra’s eye – and then whimsically refuses to lower the price when she makes an offer for her own property!
The role of Alex More is played by the up and coming young actor, Tyler Crittenden, who was seen earlier this year as Antipolis of Syracuse in the Dramtree Shakespeare’s vaudeville-themed, “A Comedy of Errors.” Mr. Moore also played Borachio in the Alchemical Theater production of Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing” at UNCW’s Lumina Festival of the Arts last summer.
With set design by Michael Epting, Barbra’s basement world comes to life and we follow Alex as he falls deeper into the rabbit hole of fame and celebrity. Buyer and Cellar is a very funny show that strives to examine life on the other side of the red carpet.
The schedule for “Buyers and Cellar” is: Thursday, February 8, Friday, February 9, and Saturday, February 10 at 7:30pm; Sunday, February 11 at 3pm. The same schedule runs for two additional weekends and includes a performance on Monday, February 19th at 7:30pm.
