Bulgarian Voices Trio & Navatman Music Collective, two of New York City’s unique vocal choirs, come together to create a new soundscape with Indian classical and Bulgarian music. Using trademark melodic techniques of their respective forms as well as innovations in group singing format, melisma, and harmony, these rich vocal traditions unite to express music of the soul and to find and spread joy. The Navatman Music Collective will perform under the leadership of noted singer Roopa Mahadevan and Bulgarian Voices Trio will be joined by Bulgarian-born founder Vlada Tomova.
Bulgarian Voices Trio
Vlada Tomova, known for her "phenomenal acrobatic vocalizations" (Boston Globe), joins with dynamic vocalists Valentina Kvasova and Shelley Thomas to weave together traditional Bulgarian village styles with artfully arranged a cappella songs and reveal the disarming power and intimacy of the unaccompanied voice. Their reinterpretations of ancient songs tell timeless tales of sweet or forbidden love, horses and wild mountains, potent wine, pepper planting, the secrets of the moon, and the sun’s falling in love with a beautiful girl and her song. Joyous, mysterious, mournful, exuberant, mesmerizing melodies; rich, unusual harmonies; and peculiar, odd rhythms come together to shimmer, intrigue, and delight the ear.
“Faithful to tradition, yet with a uniquely rich and balanced pitch, their voices reach across cultures and generations, transcending the confines of time and place into the realm of pure vocal triumph.” - The Somerville Beat
Navatman Music Collective
Navatman Music Collective (NMC) is a one-of-a-kind choir that explores the depth and beauty of Carnatic (South Indian classical) music while imbuing it with diverse, contemporary influences. Known for their "lavish, paradigm-shifting choral sounds" (New York Music Daily), the choir finds joy in the pure act of singing. Based in the cosmopolitan New York City, NMC brings to Carnatic music new presentation formats, cross-genre collaborations, original compositions, and a sense of diverse, judgment-free community.
This group challenge themselves to take this music to yet another level testifies to their collective fearlessness and irrepressible joie de vivre." - New York Music Daily
The Women's Voices series celebrates the role that female artists play in the preservation and promotion of their respective cultures and traditions.
